Taking any opportunity to feel the wind in my face

last night I missed Race no2 of the Shoe Clinic Asics 5Km series here in Christchurch, I was gutted not to make it as I had to work thankfully this morning just before 4am I got my chance to complete my own 5km race, it was very peaceful running then and I am really stoked as I beat my time from last week.

Anyway back at work now, not long to go until my relief comes in yay

Awesome First 5km race done

Really excited to have finished our first 5KM race tonight, we were the tail end Charlie’s and what was cool they kept the course open until we finished.

Then my sister Moo (First Timer) won a prize her first ever Sports Bra😜

Thank you to all of our LeapTribe who were there tonight, loved the support and encouragement at the end.

Check out the smile from before and after this great event, looking forward to our first circuit tomorrow night see you then

Sunday Session, Sugar and Flashback – 2009

20 Weeks 2016.png

Ok so Riwai was going to do a blog every week…. except this week with me in hospital and he has been working ridiculous long hours he actually asked me to write it…. That was never going to work because I write way differently to him and everyone would know it was me!  So instead this is from me…. about us and our first Sunday Session…

It has been an amazing journey.  Seven years ago Riwai and I had heard about a thing called a 20 Week Challenge. To be honest we thought it was for lycra clad gym junkies….We had no idea what it was or whether we should do it. After a family picnic we decided we formed a family group and entered our first series. You can read more here about my story here cates-20-week-story

Back in those days it ran twice a year, this year the series doesn’t start until May and we think that’s a bit long to hold off making life changes so for 2016 we decided to launch LeapStart and it just happens to be that Broni and her team have also come up with a new category – Early Start We think that’s pretty awesome, espeically after last week Riwai hitting the wall and getting started last week, he inspired me to take my bike in for a service so that after all my infusions (that blog is coming) we will both be LeapStarting!

We also had a second Flashback to 2010 – when it was my first year out as a PT.   I used to work Sundays because I was working pretty much full time. Riwai and I decided that maybe I should do that again as we used to have so much fun.    (Think I might do a poll of my LeapStars before I go back to work to see if there is any demand).

Anyway today is what Riwai calls his in between, the day before his night shift.   He slept in and then we went ahead with our first Sunday Sesh as two of our old friends who supported us both when we started out were coming for lunch.  They also both wanted to get back into training again and commit to the 20 Week Challenge.   We had an awesome catch up but i had to put my PT hat on and cross some boundaries and we had our first 2016 Sunday Session.   We were having discussions about the health, diet and fitness industry and how hard it can be to break habits of a lifetime. We also said how when you get into your 40’s being 60 is not that far away and how we often forget to celebrate all the little changes we have already made (especially since we began this career and life change in 2009).  We decided that diets were out, fitbits were in, community of like minds was in, bootcamp and yelling was out and eating real and nourishing food was a definate goal of all of ours!  We then talked about  Nadia Lim, Jamie Oliver and Damon GameauWhat the Fat?Sarah Wilson,  and  Nigel Latta on Sugar and decided realised that as two of us are diabetic, one a self- confessed sugar addict and me a food lover that we our first LeapStar would be  nourishing basics (with their ideas and cookbooks) .   So we are begin with a Nourishing Breakfast Club to get us going.  We will keep you updated on our progress.    It is so cool they are both back and the four of us will train and get healthy this year too.   Riwai and I are stoked to be able to all catch up as a team and know we can all support each other.

Oh and he did to a VLOG

So if anyone else wants to get started early you can name your start date and the number of weeks you want to do between now  until the start of this series in May.

Riwai decided that because it’s his 10th that he would give it for half price, I rolled my eyes a bit and could hear Lou (our office angel and money lady sighing too!) But you only live once and we want you to live a long time so LeapStart is for anyone who has signed up for the 2016 20 Week Body and Lifestyle Competition but wants to get started early!  Sign up to LeapStart in January and Riwai is offering over 50% discount on our LeapStart packages this year to get you started on your 20 Weeks extra category!  You can get $309 value for just $149.

Why because it is our 10th anniversary doing this great event and TutuMan and our LeapCrew are keen to support you all to kick start your 2016 year too!    See more here about our VIP package

And besides after our lunch today we think LeapStart is a perfect way to get ready for the main event and be recognised for any of the milestones you achieve before the main event begins in May. The 20 Weeks main event is run through winter, when you’re least motivated, which means by the time you finish you’ll not only be in to win lots of awesome prizes you’ll be geared up to make the most of summer.

ps don’t forget we have trained over 100 people with finalists and category winners in each season we have been involved in. We know how to inspire and encourage you to be your best and really are excited about what this year will bring!   Remember Riwai is toast when it comes to the offical stuff so if you want to do it make sure you email Lou and she will get it when she is back at work tomorrow –  leapangel.nz@gmail.com and she will contact you to discuss options.

Ready. Steady. Go

A couple of home truths again…

So I started this blog in May 2015…

To be honest I did it for the wrong reason.  I was doing my 9th series of the Catch Fitness 20 Week Body and Lifestyle Competition and thought blogging was what Cate wanted,   it put pressure on us and pretty soon I stopped.  I am stoked I actually still finished the challenge but didn’t record it on here.

This year I am being brave.  Reposting the same stuff – hell none of it’s changed – well actually my attitude towards blogging is pretty different as this year I am still doing it for us but the main reason is I am doing it for ME.

We have been in our house for over a year and I finally feel like it’s my time.  I have given to everyone else but if I don’t do it this year for me then there might be no more years left at all and that is really scary!

I said to Cate I wanted to do some videos to keep me honest and so as we signed me up she got me to start – unshaven and everything.  Geez you’ll see I am pretty uncomfortable – but we did it and here is my first 2016 video .

Then we both rang my old buddy Racy who when we do it’s good.  We decided to do the early starter and remembered that back in the day there were two series so thought we better give the early start a good nudge.  First up is back to Tuesday Hagley Park runs and where our running started in 2011 more info see –  http://www.5krunseries.com/

ps heres what I wrote in May 2015… and it’s still time to keep sorting my shit out!

So I am not getting any younger and sadly my puku isn’t getting any smaller.

I have had a roller coaster of a ride for the last six years, both my parents passed away, my wife and soulmate left her government job to pursue her dream as a personal trainer, my home town got munted after mother nature dished out thousands of earthquakes, I was in charge the day CTV was burning and my crew at the fire service were sending our friends into rescue everyone.   We were fighting our own EQC battles and I was experiencing survivor guilt.  I hit the wall more than once and each time my puku got bigger and bigger.

Cate was encouraging me to do something (probably I called it nagging and riding).  Finally my GP sent me for a new round of bloods.  We had a discussion and really I was in denial about my diagnosis of Type II diabetes.   It’s such and invisible disease I didn’t really see how it was effecting me…..

Then she mentioned insulin and I kind of flipped out.   I didn’t tell Cate and kept telling myself it would be ok.   We finally went to see a nurse specialist who taught me all about keys and how the disease worked.

It is time to sort my shit out…..  This year is my 9th time doing the Catch Fitness 20 Week Body and Lifestyle Challenge.  I am going to put everything I learnt over the years to reduce my Puku.   My hope is this blog keeps me on track and that somewhere along the way it inspires someone to kick themselves up the ass too and do something before its too late.

I am too young to die and have too much to do in my life!

My Chch recovery story begins as a new sequal…

Well in two hours I will be at the start line on the Christchurch Half Marathon.   I am excited to be doing it with many of our LeapStars.   It is pretty nippy as I fill my bowl with weetbix and I have spent the last few minutes stoking the fire and reminiscing about the first time I did this event.   It was in 2009 and it snowed and sleeted on the start line.  Looks like we will avoid that today!  Cate and I did the 10km event with her mum and dad.  We were entrants in our first 20 Week challenge and now we own a studio and have 42 entrants ourself.  Amazing.   So this year Cate’s Health means she won’t be with me or able to support us but she is here in spirit.  She has encouraged and prepared many of LeapStars to get tot the start line.   We are so proud of all our tribe,  some will walk and some will run.  Some in the 10kms and some in the 21kms.   We will weave through our city that has been through so much in the last six years.  Just like we have.  Today is about remembering, celebrating and turning the page… It feels like the end of a good book and I know the sequal is waiting for me to start.

Proud to be a Tortoise! Who will dance!

This weekend Cate posted an awesome fable by Aesop about a tortoise and the hare.

Happily I am proud to say I am Tortoise and not a Hare with regards to my race with my Puku and Health

I have come to a huge realisation over the past Four weeks with regards to my health and PUKU that this race I am in is about long term sustainable results and not quick fixes that will last a coupe of months.

I won’t be dieting, following any fad or radical eating or exercise regime.  I am definitely skipping any water only or soup diet, popping Pills or weird Potions!  I believe they just won’t work for me and my Personality type will not sustain these sort of methods over a long period of time.

So with the help of my beautiful wife Cate, my trainer Lilly and the offers of support and encouragement from so many different people I now have the confidence to face this fight head on.

Cate has been introducing me to nourishing my body.   She has been teaching me about eating fresh, seasonal and colourful. It’s all about eating for my fuel and putting things in my mouth that nourish me.    So to help broaden our food horizlns we have been having My Food Bag  My food bag delivered.  Nadia Lim’s Recipes have introduced me to all sorts of new ways of cooking.  I am getting to be quite the citrus zester.  The variety of the tastes and food combinations in the meals is amazing.  We are both learning so many new things with regards to fresh, seasonal food, preparation and cooking.   It’s pretty cool to see the food pyramid has been updated after more than 15years.  When Cate showed me Inwas stoked to see our new nourishing plan is following these new guidelines.

My food challenge comes when I am at work!  I have to show courage and dig deep when I smell Hot Chips from the Cafeteria or someone brings in takeaways.  I realise this type of food isn’t what I need right now and won’t help me in the long run.   A couple of chips here and there is still ok but I am a bit of a whole bag type of guy so at the moment it’s better to say no thanks!

I am really excited right now about my exercise plan that Lilly and Cate have designed for me.   Tonight I got to complete my first circuit in over Two years, and last weekend I worked hard enough in rehab to complete the St Clair Vineyard half marathon.  After the various injuries I have had over the last two years it was so cool to be able to partake in these type of events again.

I have given myself a new challenge – I will have a different wellness challenge to complete each month of this 20 week challenge.

Challenge for June – I  am going to go to a Dance Class, and I can tell you right now it won’t be Zumba 🙂

Ok folks shared that now!  Ideas welcome and have an a great week.

Psthanks to everyone for your messages of support it mean a lot to me
Keep shuffling forward tortoises!
Riwai (Tutuman) Grace

Tutuman is back!

It has been a roller coaster ride since I made my initial post on Puku Begone, the messages and offers of support have been truly humbling.  I remember when I first stepped out in the tutu my aim was to inspire one other person to do the same.    Four years ago I shocked Cate by saying Racy and I wanted to do the St Clair Vineyard half marathon.   Reluctantly (after she made a few wife squeaks like I don’t like running events or come to think about it I don’t actually even like running) she pulled an amazing weekend away for four of us

Here we are in 2011
Four years later and we headed back to the same event with 48 Leapstars.   Mmmm seems Cate got over she didn’t do running events and we seem to have so many cool people enjoying it with us.

Here are half of us on Saturday

I had been nervous coming off all my injuries, but I had listened to my body and the advice of the podiatrist, Physio, GP,  trainer and Cate and I completed the St Clair Vineyard half marathon in a leisurely walk with some runs through the vines.  It was a fantastic feeling starting and finishing this event.

It is such a beautiful course and Anna and Chris Polson always make us feel so welcome.  It is a great reminder to me that if you set a goal, train for it and are determined anything is achieveable.
In true Leap fashion cate and I popped on our aprons and cooked up a LeapFeast.   Three courses of fresh, yummy seasonal food inspired by nadialim.com.  and Shechocolate.com.  It was an amazing day and has me fired up and totally motivated for my next event Marching for Endometriosis on 31st May christchurchmarathon.co.nz

Ps just saying but think my amazing wife might just be persuaded to organise it all again next year…how can she refuse me a 5th celebration … Perhaps with 50 LeapStars …..

Puku Begone…

I took my measurements for the Catch Fitness 20 Week Challenge

Puku 138 CM (my puku is only 27 cms smaller than Cate’s height!)
HWR .76 (apparently this is crap)  HWR is height to waist ratio and its important that I reduce it so I am not carrying scary fat around my heart and other organs.

So my first goal is to get my Puku down and my HWR from the TAKE ACTION range to the CONSIDER ACTION range!
